Report of a meeting with José (Pepe)Gómez García, Councillor for Foreigners, 17.06.11
Present: Jose Garcia
Ishmael Garcia
Joyce Stewart CRA
Linda Biggs A Sector Chair
Mick Drummond, D Sector Community Group
Tony Connolly, Amigos de Mazarrón
Cllr García began by introducing himself through his son Ishmael who acted as translator throughout the meeting.
He advised that:
- he should be the first port of call for all foreigners to report their problems, adding that relating to Camposol, this means problems with infrastructure not houses.
-whilst his responsibility is to all the foreigners throughout the municipality of Mazarrón he wants to open an office on Camposol.
- his intention is that the office will be open from 8am-3pm in line with the opening hours of the Town Hall.
- at this moment the newly formed Council is in the process of dealing with problems within the Town Hall. Much is not as it should be and it is proving difficult to effect a speedy and efficient changeover. The new government has to get Town Hall affairs in order as well as find solutions to all that is wrong on Camposol and asks for the cooperation of all the groups within the urbanisation.
Water Supply:
Pepe has already been in talks with an architect on this subject and plans have been asked for. The storage tank – not made clear if this refers to A or BCD or both – which should hold a reserve supply of potable water for the estate is empty and non functioning and the water supply is direct from the main supply pipe.
Q.- To whom can water leaks be reported as neither Masa nor Aqualia will respond?
A. – Pepe is the contact for the reporting of water leaks and a phone number has been provided.
Q. – Who is responsible for the replacement of footpaths and roads which have been dug up to make the many repairs to the system?
A. – Aqualia and the Town Hall
Q. – Is it still the case that form July B,Cand D will be paying the Council rather than Masa for water?
A. – Nothing has been found to have been done to bring about a change in who receives the payments made by residents of BCD for their water.
Roads; Markings and Signage:
Q.- Can something can be done about the lack of road markings and direction signs which are causing danger and confusion to residents and visitors alike?
A. – It needs to be checked which are classed as private roads and which as public roads.
Q. – Will the Police be asked to make an inspection?
A. – It is intended to have a Police Station on Camposol.
Q. – Is there the money to provide this?
A. – Not at the moment, things will have to be done little by little.
When the office on Camposol is open Pepe will be available to take note of all problems which he will then take to the Town Hall, in order to do his job to the best benefit of the estate he needs the input of everyone.
Q. – Will there be a translator at the office?
A. – This is being looked at, but all printed information released will be multi-lingual.
Escrituras and Licences:
Q. – Many people are experiencing problems caused by a lack of paperwork relating to their houses, has the new Council been able to look into this yet?
A. – Pepe has had a meeting with lawyers and an architect with the aim of getting the process underway, though it seems that for some houses it may prove to be impossible.
The problems caused by the Rambla on D having been built over are a major headache. This Council is committed to all the issues, again the major problem is the lack of funds available. A figure of €15 million has been mentioned to solve all issues.
Q. – It was said by the previous government that Masa have been removed from their position as promotor and the Council is now responsible for Camposol. Is this still the case?
A. – Masa is still the body responsible. Nothing has yet come to light which shows anything was done to change that legally despite all the publicity some time ago.

Overall impression was of a genuine intention by our own Councillor and the new government to put right the many problems they have inherited throughout the municipality of Mazarrón.
Their situation is very difficult at the moment due to the chaotic state of affairs within the Town Hall, and Pepe repeatedly said that they need the cooperation and input of the residents in order to be able to do their best for Camposol. As he intends to be available locally this should be relatively easy, despite the language barrier.
This was a first meeting with our local Councillor, the next should be with the Mayor and the rest of the Councillors and will be after the audit has been completed at the Town Hall and they have a clearer idea of what can be done.
